Welsh Guardsman overhaul sponsored by Felinfoel Brewery
The overhaul of steam locomotive "Welsh Guardsman" is proceeding apace thanks to generous sponsorship from Felinfoel Brewery.
The locomotive was built in 1944 and is an "Austerity" 0-6-0ST. It latterly worked at Cynheidre and Pontarddulais before coming to the Gwili Railway in 1980. It was restored by 1992 and was named "Welsh Guardsman" as a tribute to the Welsh Guards Infantry Regime. The locomotive has both military and Welsh heritage so the name was felt appropriate.
Welsh Guardsman has been sidelined since 2007 but it has now been transported to the workshops of the Llangollen Railway in North Wales where it is hoped that restoration will be completed during 2012. Among the work required are repairs to the boiler and cylinders. It will return to service in the black livery it carried previously.
