The volunteer run Gwili Steam Railway, is the only steam standard gauge railway operating in South West Wales

The first train ran at Easter 1978 using one coach pulled by a
Peckett 0-4-0 called Merlin, Since then it has developed into one
of the principle tourist attractions in Carmarthenshire.

The Gwili Railway is a living reminder of a Great Western Railway branch line set in the breathtaking Carmarthenshire hills. The trip down memory lane starts at Bronwydd Arms Station, and the steam train follows the route, originally taken by the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth line to a delightful halt at Danycoed

Next time you watch a period drama on television, look very closely at any railway scenes; they may have been shot on the Gwili Steam Railway. A series of film contracts, which have included Carrie’s War Heidi and recently The Edge of Love were filmed here, endorsing attempts made to recreate a living section of a Great Western Railway branch line in rural West Wales. This is further reinforced by the friendliness of the volunteer staff.

The Gwili Railway also offers photographic charters. Former GWR locomotives are hired by photographers, moved to the Gwili by road for a few days, so that scenes appropriate to bygone days can correctly be recreated and the once-familiar shapes of ‘Panniers’, ‘Prairies’ and even the nifty 14XX tanks have all visited the line in recent years.

There are exciting times ahead as plans are in place to extend the Gwili Railway to the outskirts of Carmarthen – to a new terminus at the old Abergwili Junction. This was the point where the line to Llandeilo turned right and headed up the Towy valley.
