HOW TO SUPPORT THE RAILWAY AS A VOLUNTEER

The railway is staffed entirely by volunteers, and many society members derive enjoyment from being involved in working on the line. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds - from students to accountants, from teachers to builders! No special skills are needed -we’ll provide you with all the training you need. The railway is a very friendly place to work, and new volunteers fit in very quickly - you’re sure of a warm welcome! Some volunteers visit the railway every weekend, others once a year, whilst those who cannot travel do much work at home. If you can only spare a few hours or a day, your services will be valued!

OPERATING THE RAILWAY

On operating days, a wide variety of volunteers are required. Qualified staff are needed as Drivers, Firemen, Guards, and Signalmen (certain age and health restrictions apply). Assistance is always needed in the catering department and in the booking office.

MAINTENANCE AND RESTORATION

Throughout the year, and especially during the winter months, volunteers maintain the Railway’s locomotives and coaches, restore buildings, and help keep the line itself in good condition. If you have practical skills, the relevant department will be very glad to hear from you, and if you don't it is an excellent way to learn some!!

BEHIND THE SCENES WORK

A lot of railway work goes on behind the scenes, away from the Railway itself, making it possible for volunteers who can’t get to the Railway that often to be actively involved. Fundraising and publicity are important areas of work. Volunteers are always needed to distribute leaflets outside the areas covered by our distributors, email publicity@gwili-railway.co.uk or ring the Railway and we will get some to you.
